Why it has this name
“El mérito es la corona” (Merit is the crown), reads the lettering on its wall: it is the title of a play by Agustín de Salazar y Torres. In January 1691 Miguel de Castro’s company asked for more than 500 ducats to stage it here. It was a play “of transformations”, with so many scene changes that the stage had to be enlarged. Three years later, in 1694, the theatre closed.

If you come by car
The Jewish Quarter is a restricted pedestrian zone of narrow streets, so it is best to park first and walk in. To drop off luggage, there is a loading bay in Plaza Agrupación de Cofradías, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 11:00.
