Why it has this name
According to the historian Rafael Ramírez de Arellano, the city gaol already stood on this site in 1562. It is the oldest date in the house. Work on the theatre began in that old gaol, by then in ruins, at the end of 1601. Today the building’s load-bearing walls are more than two metres thick.

If you come by car
The Jewish Quarter is a restricted pedestrian zone of narrow streets, so it is best to park first and walk in. To drop off luggage, there is a loading bay in Plaza Agrupación de Cofradías, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 11:00.
